This Design Practice module has been a really good opportunity for me to start to think more precisely about the path in which I want to follow later on in my career, I think that being given a wide range of briefs to choose from has really benefited my work and I would like to be given this freedom in future work. Obviously I think that I know exactly what area I want to go into, I specialise in design for print combing illustration and type together. The three briefs that I chose helped me confirm my decisions and capitalise on my strengths in my work. I think that this module has also made me more committed to the course, the last 5 weeks have been a real eye opener into the amounts of work that needs to be done and in order to do that you have to make sure you are in all the time making sure that you are in a social, working environment and this has really reflected on my work.
I think I have also made sure that I didn’t just rush into an idea…I made sure that I researched and developed my ideas and concepts carefully to ensure that I cover all aspects of the grading system and generally really to get a better understanding of my work, which also in turn helps when I come to speaking about my work as I find that if I am not confident about my work I struggle talking about it in front of others.
In regards to the research in which I have done for my work, some of the briefs I spent more time in this area as I was on a tight schedule. For the Wagamamas brief I went to the restuarant, looked on the website and got a feel for everything about wagamamas which then reflected on my development as I had a clear understanding of exactly who my target market were and what they would want to see. I think overall for my Wagamamas brief I am pleased with my final out come, I think it covers everything that the brief asked and could potentially work. I researched into printing methods for the napkin that would be placed inside the chopstick sleeve though I wasn’t actually able to get the napkin printed which I was a bit annoyed about but I think that as long as I gave an idea of what it was going to look like that is the main thing.
I really enjoyed my TYPE/ENVIRONMENT brief although I think I would have liked slightly longer on it to carry on developing my new type face although I think I am going to do that in my own time. I haven’t always opted for a typography brief but I was really intrigued by this one and thought I would give it a go. But I was to get more knowledgably in this area to help me in briefs in the future. I only briefly covered type in 1st year and I decided to do an image module over type in second year so I thought I would choose this brief to refresh my memory and learn more about type components, size, weight etc.
The Sainsburys brief was a quick little brief that I really enjoyed doing, I love illustration so I knew this brief would be perfect, I think it is important to carry on developing my illustration skills and I think I am beginning to have my own style of illustrations..people in class are saying they knew straight away that they were my drawings which I like I like being recognised for a style. I think I work really well with using water colours and biro pen and this style seemed to fir perfectly with the Sainsburys brief.
Overall I am happy with all my work that I produced and I really worked hard and put the effort in and although it was really stressful at times I think that’s what I needed and I am really determined to carry on the way I am going and doing and I really hope my grade reflects this I really want to start hitting the 2:1 mark!!!!!!

ENVIRONMENT/TYPOGRAPHY/ENVIRONMENT

Changing the opacity of the grass will help define the information that I am going to place on the page but yet also still keeps type in context. I am going to experiment printing this photograph of grass on to different stocks of paper to see what effect i produce.

Inspiration... it looks to be that some type faces are more legiable than others...also some don't really have strong components by still work really well as a set...I think i have considered this when produing my type made out of dandelions...I think overall it is quite legiable but as a set it is more understandable so on my final board i think i may display the type face alkong with a word to empshasis the type.

It is amazing when you start to look in to type what sort of things people create letter forms out of! i really enjoy experiementing with type and I think I am going to involve type more in my 3rd year as it has become more of an interest to me.

EXISTING TYPE....taken from books in the library. Inspirational starting points!

WAGAMAMAS

Material that i collected from Wagamamas in Leeds city centre...existing promotional material...flyers, leaflets, postcards, stickers etc.

Existing serviette designs...it is surprising the amount of detail that you can print onto such light flimsy material.

I want to print onto a napkin/serviette..I want to be able to print a selection of the wagamamas menu onto the material that would be placed inside the chopstick sleeve that I have designed. Bleow is a screen grab of a website that I found which helps me figure out how it is printed in industry.

Ideas taken my books in the library thinking about promotional ideas for wagamamas...compositons and ways of communicating information. I think it would be good to produce something that is going to be interactive so that when given to members of the public they may respond to it more effectively!

photography that i have taken using materials that i collected when i visited Wagamamas.

initial idea below: using visuals that are relevant to wagamamas and I have tried using type to look like noodles which emphasis's the food range sold at wagamamas.
